BlackBerry Q5 review with Battery Test (updated photos & Video)

By Vijay @ 11:04pm

BlackBerry’s revival rested on its all-new BB 10 software – but the only two BB 10 handsets that have been launched so far have been priced too high to make a difference to markets such as India. The Z10 came in at Rs 43k, and the keyboard-equipped Q10, at a staggering Rs 45k price that was universally criticized. So while much of the world didn’t get very excited about the Q5, India’s mobile market has been very curious about it.

The Q5 is a much cheaper Q10. At just over half the price, it gives you almost a Q10-like experience: the same software, in a cheaper package. Where the Q10 felt premium and heavy, with aluminium touches, the all-plastic Q5 is lighter, but feels sturdy – and is in fact easier to hold than the Q10.

BlackBerry worked hard at distinguishing the Q5, starting with the keypad. It borrows the old Curve model’s smaller but more-spaced-out keypad, making the Q5 look older than the Q10. I’m typing faster on the Q5′s keypad. WOW..

The Q5′s touch-screen has the same 3.1″ square size and 720×720 pixel resolution as the Q10′s, but uses LCD (instead of the Q10′s more modern AMOLED), making it whiter if mildly less capable in bright sunlight. Yet I found the Q5 touchscreen easier to use, for there’s more space under the screen, making it easier to swipe up – an action you use often, to get out of an app.

So the two are well matched. The Q5 is slightly slower, but doesn’t feel sluggish. Both use dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and 2 GB of memory, but the Q5 runs at 1.2 GHz against the Q10′s 1.5 GHz. However, I didn’t really load it with apps. Web browser performance on both handsets is terrible.

The real disappointment with the Q5 is its 5 Mp camera, down from the Q10′s 8 Mp. The resolution doesn’t really matter, but the Q5 clearly has a cheaper sensor. Outdoor daylight shots are okay, but indoor or low-light shots are mediocre, noisy.

My other disappointment is. You can’t even make or end a call, or speed-dial, without using the touch screen – which makes it a pain to call or answer when driving. The old “call end” button was a great way to exit apps, but now it’s all touch. There’s no “BlackBerry” key either, to give you quick, context-sensitive menu options on everything – for instance to quickly forward an SMS as an email. Somehow Blackberry 10 is missing Menu & Basic Keys, which are Must for Blackberry..

Overall, though, the BlackBerry Q5 is very capable, and, compared to the Q10, very good value. It matches the Q10 on many counts, and if you can live with sacrificing the Q10′s cooler look and feel, is the handset to buy. The Q5 isn’t sexy enough to make users switch from Android or iPhone. It isn’t cheap enough to get low-end-BB users to upgrade from their older Curve. Here is a quick hands on from GSMArena..

So we’re back to the price. A Rs 25k price still doesn’t give BlackBerry a market-saver in India. It desperately needs phones in the Rs 10-15k price range.

Still, the Q5 is good value, and all the more so because BB 10 no longer requires you to pay for BlackBerry service. You just need a 3G plan. This isn’t great for the company – BlackBerry loses some of its service revenue – but it’s nice for the user.

 Battery Test from GSM Arena:

14 hours is more than a human being can manage in a single day, so the Q5 will handle all your business calls. If you do less talking, you can even browse the web for hours and view some videos & you’d still have enough juice left when you come home.

Wants to Know, how much faster the 2013 Nexus 7 is, compared against last year’s Nexus 7

By Vijay @06:01pm

The new Nexus 7 (officially listed as 2013 Nexus 7) brings a lot to the table. It is not just the first ‘Retina’ compact tablet, it also brings the sharp display and upgraded silicon at an extremely affordable price.

It’s a big upgrade over last year’s Nexus 7 which already was brilliant. The new Nexus 7-incher is thinner, lighter and has a narrower bezel, making it more comfortable to hold.

Most importantly for geeks, though, it is more powerful. The 2013 Nexus 7 swaps the Nvidia Tegra chip from last year with a shiny new Qualcomm Snapdragon, and the difference is massive. Android Police was the first to run the cross-platform Geekbench test o the Nexus 7 and compare the results against those of last year’s tablet. The difference is staggering. We’ll leave the images speak for themselves.

The new Nexus 7 is nearly five times faster on sequential reads, 2x faster on random reads, and about 1.5x faster on both sequential and random write operations. SQLite performance appears around double that of the first gen N7, as well. That sounds promising.

Sony Xperia Z and ZL get the official Android 4.3 ASOP Rom

By Vijay @ 05:36pm

Sony was quick to announce the list of devices that will get Android 4.3 and release an AOSP ROM for the Xperia Tablet Z. The Japanese have since updated the post with good news for Xperia Z and Xperia ZL owners… They’ll get this AOSP build too….

Note that this is the early days and just like the Xperia Tablet Z build things aren’t 100% operational and the builds aren’t suitable for daily use.

Still, it’s nice to see a maker react so quickly to the release new Android version. This will also help developers of custom ROMs who are no doubt digging into Android 4.3′s source code trying to adapt it to their own builds.

Anyway, there’s no file you can flash on your Sony Xperia Z or ZL phone, instead you’ll have to grab the repo from GitHub and build it yourself. Instructions on how to do that and flash the resulting ROM (and unlock the bootloader if you haven’t already) are available on the respective GitHub pages – for the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL.

If you don’t know what GitHub is, you can also download the Xperia Z ROM built by an XDA-Developers member pulser_g2. We didn’t find a similar build for the ZL, if you do drop a link in the comments.

One More Android 4.3 bonus: Better Photospheres

By Vijay @ 09:56am

Another Android 4.3 bonus: better Photospheres

One of our favorite features of Android is Photosphere imaging. Let’s face it, panoramas are what your parents used to shoot, and Photospheres are flat out better. It’s a 360 degree photo, there isn’t much to dislike about that. Frankly, Photospheres were a bit tough to master in Android 4.2, but they have gotten a big boost in Android 4.3.

Previously, it was quite awkward to get Photospheres right, there would be some jaggies or odd stitching, but the team behind the feature at Google have made some serious improvements. Evan Rapoport, a product manager at Google detailed the improvements on Google+, saying that the team has worked hard to improve alignment and stitching, so horizons are flatter and there are generally fewer errors throughout the image. Also, exposure correction has gotten a big boost to make the colors more even.
So their is one more reasons to look again into your Nexus phone’s notification area..

Internet Explorer 11 Developer Preview available for Windows 7 PC’s

By Vijay @ 09:46am

Internet Explorer 11

Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 Consumer Preview introduced their latest version web browser, Internet Explorer 11. Today the company has released the developer preview of IE11 for those still on Windows 7.

Internet Explorer 11 promises to bring improved performance, faster page load times, new standards support for next generation sites, and a completely redesigned “F12” developer toolkit.

A faster browsing experience is thanks to new technologies such as Internet Explorer 11’s ability to natively decode images in real-team using a machine’s GPU, this ability plus the browser’s additional capability to render text on the GPU is said to also use less memory usage, reduce energy usage, and improve battery life.

In addition, the latest version of Microsoft’s browser is the first to implement the World Wide Web Consortium’s Resource Priorities, allowing web developers to pick which parts of a web page need to be loaded first. A little bit of artificial intelligence also never hurts (except in every Sci-Fi movie ever), which is why Internet Explorer 11 supports HTML5 link prefetching and pre-rendering; this allows the web browser to try and anticipate where you will visit next and load those links before you click on them.

Microsoft has been putting a lot of their cards into the “Hardware-Accelerated” category for the past few Internet Explorer releases. Internet Explorer 11 includes support for WebGL technology to render 2D and 3D content using the machine’s GPU.

To protect a user’s machine against malicious intent, Internet Explorer 11 scans all WebGL content for unsafe content. In addition, the hardware-accelerated WebGL content will only run on verified safe GPU drivers and hardware.

Also Internet Explorer brings improved developer tools allowing web developers to profile sites and fix performance faster than ever. The new F12 toolkit includes a UI Responsiveness and Memory Profiling tool, Live DOM Explorer, CSS inspection tool, and JavaScript debugging support.

If you currently use Internet Explorer, go ahead and download Microsoft’s latest developer preview here. Otherwise, just stick with whichever browser you are probably using instead.

Lenovo K6 leaked with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU and 5-inch 1080p screen with dual Sim..

By Vijay @ 09:37am

Lenovo has been making a big push in the smartphone market. Only recently, it launched the Intel Clovertrail+ based K900 smartphone in India. Now, GizChina has leaked pictures of the Lenovo K6, which also could be powered by Qualcomm’s benchmark crunching Snapdragon 800 CPU. The phone will also have dual-SIM capabilities.

The presence of the Snapdragon 800 CPU does make total sense considering it will power most of the flagship devices that will launch in the second half of 2013. In addition to this, the phone will also have a full-HD 5-inch display, which throws it into flagship Android smartphone category, considering it is the defacto standard for a Android flagship. Another major advantage of the Snapdragon 800 CPU is the presence of the Adeno 330 GPU that can encode and decode 4k video, this obviously means a massive leap in graphical performance.

Currently, the most powerful device made by Lenovo is the K900, which has a dual-core Intel Clovertrail+ CPU, a 13-megapixel camera with a f/1.8 aperture and a 5.5-inch full-HD screen. Looks like the K6, will be higher up in the pecking order, at least for Lenovo.

Wants to apply for a new passport on your smartphone, here’s an app

By Vijay @ 09:30am

The tedious process of applying for a new passport is set to become easier thanks to an Android smartphone app called ‘mPassport Seva’. The app developed by the Ministry of External Affairs, already offers passport-related services but very soon will also accept applications for a new passport, PTI reports.

The app, which was launched in March this year, offers users services like passport application status, tracking, locating the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and general information on various steps involved in obtaining a passport. The app was also declared as winner for e-India public choice award 2013 under government to citizen service category. To further increase its potential, in the coming months the government is working towards adding a new feature to the app, wherein, one will be able to apply for a new passport right from the app itself.

“Applicants can soon fill details on passport applications through mPassport Seva app. We are working on this and are hopeful it will be launched in next few months,” Joint Secretary (Passport Seva Project) and Chief Passport Officer Muktesh Kumar Pardeshi said.

The mPassport Seva app is available for free from the Play Store.
